Charles Howard "'Abby"" Abernathy


Charles H. "Abby" Abernathy, 82, of Chillicothe, died at 5:30 am Thursday, November 27, 2014 in Heartland of Chillicothe. He was born on February 19, 1932 in Frankfort, the son of the late James and Elizabeth Fisher Abernathy. He married the former Rosemary Seymour on March 17, 1989 and she survives.

Also surviving are three daughters; Judy (Duane) Halcomb, Jane Abernathy and Kim Abernathy all of Frankfort, two step daughters; Michelle Sigler, Melissa (John) Hutton and one step son; Mike Sigler all of Chillicothe, Thirteen grandchildren; Josh and James McQuiniff, Jessica Engel, Ryan Abernathy, David Halcomb, Daniel Halcomb, Emilee Beam, Bethanie Beam, Tyler Hutton, Heather Saultz, Rachel Hutton, Eric Hutton, Heath Sigler and Ryan Sigler, five great grandchildren; Brenna, Matthew, Colt, Corlee and Lillian, three siters; Barbara Wilhite of Frankfort, Nancy Johnson of Mesick, MI, Jean Lane of Lattaville, and one brother, Joe Abernathy of Chillicothe and several nieces and nephews. Abby was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Lynn McQuiniff, two brothers; James Abernathy, Jr. who was killed in World War II on August 20, 1944 and David Abernathy.

Charles was a 1951 graduate of Frankfort High School. He went to work at Mead Paper on June 19, 1951, less than a month after graduation and he worked there until March 1, 1994. He left on July 31, 1952 to serve in the US Army and he served during the Korean War. He was a member of the Frankfort Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder and had served as a Deacon. Abby was a 55 year member of the Joseph Ellsworth White Post 483 - Frankfort American Legion where he had served as Commander and for many years served on the Honor Guard for burial of many of his comrades and friends. He had also served as basketball official for over 25 years. He loved following his grandchildren in their sports activities and the sports at Adena. Charles loved to spend time playing cards with his many friends at several different groups.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 1, 2014 at 11 am in the Frankfort Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Getty officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort where military honors will be accorded by the Frankfort American Legion. Friends can visit with the Abernathy family on Sunday from 4 to 7 pm at the EBRIGHT FUNERAL HOME, Frankfort.
