Dane M. Garman, 85, of Greenfield, died at 3:10 p.m. June 12, 2012 at his residence, surrounded by his family. He was born April 24, 1927 in Highland County, the son of the late William Curtis and Cecil Washburn Garman.
A 1945 graduate of Hillsboro High School, Mr. Garman was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army. He was a medic at West Point.
After the war, Mr. Garman attended Miami University, Oxford, where he played football. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science.
On October 7, 1951, Mr. Garman married the former Jewell Emily Thompson, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael Garman of Greenfield and Greg (Robin Parker) Garman of Greenfield; three grandsons, Bryce (Sarah Riley) Garman of Atlanta, Ga., Cale (Leslie Boggs) Garman of Pataskala, and Adam (Amy Larimore) Garman of Greenfield; two great granddaughters, Isabel LeAnn Garman and Claire Emmeline Garman, and two brothers, Walter (Irene) Garman of Hillsboro and George (Jeanie) Garman of Pittsburgh.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Garman, and a sister, Mona Garman Pearce
Mr. Garman worked for the Central Ohio Breeder's Association (COBA), where he received a COBA technician award for breeding 10,000 cows. He and his family then moved to Napoleon, where he was the general manager of Farmers Friend Mineral Company. In 1976, Mr. Garman, along with his brother Walt Garman, purchased Garman Feed & Supply in Lyndon, which is presently owned and operated by his son Greg. In 2005, Mr. Garman opened Garman Feed & Supply in Bainbridge.
He was a member of the South Salem Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, served as chairman of the church board and was a member of the pastor-parish committee. Mr. Garman was involved in numerous church activities. He was a 60-year member of the Highland Masonic Lodge 38, and a member of the Greenfield Lions Club.
Mr. Garman loved farming, animals, his business and people.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 11 am in the South Salem United Methodist Church, with Dr. Phillip Malone officiating. Burial will follow in South Salem Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Concerned Veterans of Greenfield. Friends may call at the South Salem United Methodist Church from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday where a Masonic service will be held at 7:30 pm
Memorial contributions may be made to the South Salem United Methodist Church and Fayette County Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of ANDERSON-EBRIGHT FUNERALHOME, Greenfield.
