In the early morning hours of November 23, 2024, Farrell Eugene “Gene” Posey peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by family. He courageously fought a long and hard battle with cancer, facing many ups and downs over the years. Despite his struggles, Gene never lost his sense of humor or his love for a good story, often leaving us wondering just how much of it was true.
Born on February 5, 1944, to Pete and Flora Posey, Gene was one of six siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Ella Mae Saunders and Ann Saunders; and his brothers, Kenny Posey and Frank Posey. He is survived by his brothers, Clark Posey and Ronald Posey.
On August 11, 1962, Gene married the love of his life, Ellen Johnson. This past summer, they celebrated 63 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love and family, raising four children: Chris (Sarah) Posey, Robin Posey, Brook Posey, and Jason Posey.
Family meant the world to Gene. He had a unique way of making sure they stayed connected, often jokingly asking if they had “forgotten where he lived” if too much time had passed between visits. His grandchildren held an extra-special place in his heart. Whether they were running through mulberries, building forts, or getting into mischief under his watchful eye, the memories they created with their Papaw will be cherished forever. His nine grandchildren—Heather (Matt) Miller, Tim (Jaime) Posey, Kristin Posey, Amanda Castle, Dustin Davis, Nate (Carissa) Posey, Anthony Leasure, Dacia (Tyler) Gierhart, and Levi Posey—were the light of his life. Gene was also blessed with many great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him a lot of joy.
Gene was a man of many talents and passions. Known for his ability to fix just about anything, he was always willing to lend a hand or share his wisdom. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, gardening (especially growing enormous tomatoes), and crafting handmade knives. His happiest days were spent in the woods or on hunting trips to Colorado, Kentucky, and West Virginia with his sons and hunting buddies.
Gene’s gift for storytelling, his ornery sense of humor, and his welcoming spirit ensured he never met a stranger. He touched the lives of so many and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
