John B. Holbert 84 of Bainbridge, departed this life 9:40 pm Monday, November 4, 2013 from Maple View Manor, after a long illness.
He was born September 25, 1929 in Greenup County, KY to William and Ellen Griffith Holbert and was one of 16 children. Surviving siblings are Margaret (Herb) Southers, Bessie (Clyde) Clemmons and Joseph (Janet) Holbert. He is also survived by a loving wife Tiny Free Holbert; sons, John W. Holbert Joel (Cathi) Holbert and Robert Holbert all of Bainbridge; daughter, Jean (William) Whitehouse of Trenton, OH; son-in-law, William Strausbaugh; step children, Judy (Max) Shoemaker, Debbie (Tom) Davis and Eddie (Kathy) Free; daughter-in-law, Trit Free and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
On November 26, 1949 he married Dorothy Skaggs and remained married until her death September 8, 2003. Besides Dorothy, his parents and siblings, John was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Strausbaugh, grandson, Steve Holbert and a step son Mike Free.
John was employed by Paxton Township for 33 years and after retiring was elected as trustee where he served for 20 years and he worked part time at the Smith-Moore-Ebright Funeral Home for over 20 years. John joined Morgan Fork United Baptist church in 1979 and was a good and faithful member. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held 1 pm Friday, November 8, 2013 at the SMITH-MOORE-EBRIGHT Funeral Home of Bainbridge. Burial will follow in the Bainbridge Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
