Kevin Matthew "Matt" Cockrell 41 of Frankfort, KY went to be with the Lord Sunday, September 19, 2021. He was born March 6, 1980 in Springfield, Ohio to Debbie (Free) Davis and the late Kevin Evelsizor. On June 12, 2021 he married his best friend Carly L. Terrell.
In addition to his wife, Matt is survived by his mother Debbie (Tom) Davis; father Dave (Amy) Cockrell; sisters Nicole Cockrell and Tara (Gabe) Weaver; brother Sean (Mary Claire) Cockrell; step brother Adam Davis; mother-in-law Terry Terrell; father-in-law Kevin (Brenda) Terrell; sisters-in-law Tera (Jason) Watts and Jessica (Joe) Marks; brother-in-law Justin (Bethany) Watkins; nieces and nephews Isaac, Seth, Jonah, Kiya, Ainsley, Ember, Haylee, Zachary, Sydnee, Addyson, Kennedy, Hattie and Mollie; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Matt was preceded in death by his grandparents Tiny and Dewey Free and Dick and Ruth Evelsizor as well as his four-legged friends Percy and Sully.
Matt was an alumnus of Morehead State University, Georgetown College and Campbellsville University. He earned a Rank I Masters of Art in School Improvement and taught Art at Martha Layne Collins High School, where he was also the former girls golf coach. Matt was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Kentucky and National Art Educators Associations. He received the secondary level Art Educator of the year in 2019.
Matt touched so many students' lives and left a lasting impression on them. He enjoyed traveling and seeing the historical sights and visiting the National Parks. Matt liked to play golf, camp and he always worked to improve his art program. He also attended Buckrun Baptist Church in Frankfort, Kentucky. Matt was a loving teacher, husband, brother, son, uncle, and friend.
Funeral services will be held 1 pm Friday September 24, 2021 at the Church of Christ in Bainbridge, Ohio, with Sean Cockrell and Troy Villars officiating. Following the service, Matt will be laid to rest in the Bainbridge Cemetery. Friends may visit with Matt’s family from 5-8 pm Thursday at the Church. Those attending the service should wear a face mask and observe social distancing. A memorial service will be held at Martha Layne Collins High School in Shelbyville, Kentucky on October 2nd at 2pm.
